Residents urged to use less water

-

THE Charters Towers Regional Council has called on Charters Towers, Greenvale, and Ravenswood residents to limit their water use.

It comes as the water level at the Burdekin Weir dropped below the level one restriction trigger point at the weekend.

Water Resources councillor Alan Barr said restrictions came into effect on Tuesday.

“We haven’t had any recent significant inflows to the weir, and we have seen water storage levels drop as we head into the hottest part of the year,” Cr Barr said.

“Council will continue to monitor usage before making any decision on whether to increase restrictions further.”

Under level one restrictions residents can only use sprinklers between 6am-8am and 7pm-9pm on the odds and evens system for lawns and gardens; handheld hoses, watering cans or buckets can be used at any time; and paved areas can only be cleaned with high-pressure water cleaners.

Cr Barr said it was also a good idea to check for any leaks around the home.

“Look at taps, toilets, sinks, showers, and anything else that uses water,” he said.

“A small leak or drip over a long period of time can end up wasting a lot of water.”

He said the council took water conservation seriously as part of its drought management plan and was committed to reducing water usage across its operations.
