Boomers relishing Capitals test as they eye finals charge

- MATTHEW ELKERTON

BOOMERS rookie forward Rachel Brewster believes the squad is poised to make a strong run into the WNBL finals.

The Melbourne outfit is entrenched in a battle for the top four with fellow Victorian outfit Southside Flyers after a fast start to the season. But after a strong win over third-placed Adelaide and with their longest turnaround of the season to rest and recharge, the Boomers have a chance to cement their spot in finals contention.

The forward said coach Guy Molloy was treating the break as a mini pre-season.

“We are taking it as a training camp opportunity. Before the season we had such a broken pre-season, we didn’t have our whole team together before we got into quarantine,” Brewster said. “We are going to take this week to flatten out some wrinkles we have got, and work on executing our game plan the way we want and work on those little things we didn’t have time to before.

“Because the season is so short we need to learn from the games we have played but we also need to focus on moving on quickly on to the next one. You can’t dwell on the past games. We are focusing on what we need to do and our execution, and solidifying that.

“We will have a more intensive training in the next couple of days and then fade it out to a bit more light work at the end of the week and into our game against Canberra.”

The clash with the high-flying Capitals, top of the table after a run of five straight wins, could be the defining game of the Boomers season.

A showdown with the twotime defending champions will be a perfect yardstick for Molloy.

While the Boomers have shown flashes of their brilliance they have struggled to find the consistency in their game.

Losing Tess Madgen to injury proved critical with back-toback losses, but a return to form over the Lightning could be the springboard to launch into the back end of the season.

“We definitely want to stay top four, but our main goal is top two. I think that is very achievable for us,” Brewster said.
