Be COVIDsafe during disasters

-

TOWNSVILLE City Council has urged residents to make COVID-19 prevention a priority when developing their emergency response plans this cyclone season.

Townsville Local Disaster Management Group chairperson and Mayor Jenny Hill said COVID prevention was an important factor being taken into consideration ahead of the disaster season.

“Long-term residents are familiar with the wet season but 2020 is unlike any year we’ve faced before,” Cr Hill said.

“We are encouraging people to think about their own well-being. Reach out to loved ones and plan to stay together instead of going to a cyclone shelter. This will reduce the risk posed by COVID-19.

“It is important to pick a safe building and prepare an emergency kit as debris or fallen power lines could isolate you for a few days.”

Cr Hill said the cyclone shelter at Heatley would be available if a cyclone threatens Townsville.

She said staying COVID-SAFE would be a key part of the planning process for the TLDMG and emergency services.

“There will be room for residents who need help after a cyclone has crossed the coast but, once again, please plan ahead to stay with family and friends to arrange a place to stay,” she said.

TLDMG deputy chairperson Kurt Rehbein said keeping your front and back yard neat and tidy was an important part of getting ready for the disaster season.

Cr Rehbein urged residents across the city to keep properties maintained to reduce potential fire risks and keep vermin at bay.

“Many communities across the country are still recovering from the damage of the last season,” Cr Rehbein said.

“It’s important that we remember how quickly natural disasters can arrive, and that we do everything we can to prepare for whatever the disaster season might throw at us, including fires and cyclones.”

Cr Rehbein said one of the easiest ways to get your property ready was to maintain front and back yards.

“It’s important that your yard is maintained with any loose items or materials stored securely to prevent them becoming projectile objects during storms or cyclones,” he said.

“While you’re cleaning your yard, don’t forget to clean any debris out of your gutters so that water can drain away from your home quickly.”
