Southside steamroller gathers pace with Lightning win

- JORDAN GERRANS

THE high-profile Southside Flyers are rolling now.

After a little hiccup last week in FNQ against the defending champion Capitals, they have now dispatched Perth, Townsville and Adelaide over the past few days as their WNBL campaign builds momentum.

It was the Adelaide Lightning who had to deal with the quality Flyers yesterday, going down 110-79. Southside are now 7-2 on the season.

A 30-17 second term set up the triumph for Southside, who are stacked with WNBA and Opals talent, after they trailed by three points at the first change.

Both clubs lit it up from deep, shooting over 50 per cent from downtown into the third term.

An 8-2 burst straight after the halftime break, which forced an Adelaide time-out, put Southside up by 16 and the contest was all but over. Flyers skipper Jenna O’hea was money from three, draining five of her first eight attempts, including three in a short period in the early stages of the third term.

A Monique Conti bomb from three as the third term expired put the Flyers up by 22 points.

Reserve guard Conti was excellent defensively as well, annoying the opposition point guard for all her minutes on court.

“We have great shooters, if we can get them open, they will make a large percentage of them,” Flyers coach Cheryl Chambers said.

After going for 26 points and nine rebounds on Saturday, Liz Cambage’s offensive dominance rolled into Sunday.

Adelaide big Louella Tomlinson did her best to slow Cambage, as well as making her work on the other end of the floor, but the WNBA star scores whenever she likes at this level. Cambage finished with 25 points and seven boards.

Adelaide point guard Alex Wilson missed yesterday’s clash with the Flyers after starring in her club’s Saturday victory.

In Wilson’s absence, Abigail Wehrung took over for the Lightning, quickly jumping out to 10 points inside the first six minutes of play.

Wehrung averages 12 points a game so far this season.
