Mullet man aims to beat six games

- MATTHEW ELKERTON

STORM heavy hitter Darryn Schonig is far from complex.

The Kirwan High product, who made his NRL debut last season before playing six games at the back end of the year, has no big goals for the pre-season apart from just getting back on the field.

The 24-year-old has developed a cult following in rugby league circles due to his healthy mullet and his noholds-barred approach on the field.

The 185cm, 112kg prop hits like a freight train on both sides of the ball, and he is relishing an opportunity to get back into contact during the Storm’s pre-season camp in Geelong.

“I have fond memories here (in Geelong), it is always a tough session here. The facilities are great and the food is pretty good,” Schonig Media this week.

“(I want to continue) just where I left off last season, things like my bump and my passing, the fundamentals.

“(The debut) has made me a bit more hungry this year. It was my debut year and I played six games and that has made me just want to set my goals that bit further. I want to double those amount of games I get to play in the top team. I am just keen for another year of footy.”

As for the mullet, Schonig sees no clippers slicing through the locks in the near future after adding more than a year’s worth of growth.

The mullet has had a renaissance in recent seasons, and while he doesn’t believe he is the inspiration, the prop said he was happy to keep the flame alive. “I have put so much effort into it and letting it grow for that long, I am not ready to part with it,” Schonig said.
