COREY DREAMS OF A PERFECT PASS

- NICK WRIGHT

HE IS gunning to be the youngest quarterback to win a Reef Bowl, and should he come out on top Corey Jeeves has visions of how it will happen.

With older brother Thomas manning the wide receiver lines, the 17-yearold is eager to spot his sibling in the clear and launch the perfect pass for a matchwinning touchdown.

That could all come to the fore tonight when the Townsville Cyclones take on Cairns Falcons in their bid for a sixth North Queensland Gridiron League title.

“I’ve had a couple of dreams about that, dropping back and throwing a pass to Tom,” Corey said.

“I feel like when we were both receiver there was a bit of competition, he was trying to hold the spot as number one, but when I moved back to QB he settled me into it and said a few wise words.”

Corey has settled into the role as the attack’s main man with regular star Boeden Brunne’s work commitments forcing him in and out of the team.

The regular quarterback will miss his side’s return to the decider, however a stint as his backup has given Corey plenty of confidence.

He said there was a sense of nervous energy around the group, but it was more in anticipation than anxiety.

“Backing up Boeden at the start he taught me a lot, he taught me everything you need to know, so I felt comfortable going into my first game,” Corey said.

“A lot of the boys are nervous, you can tell it. I was around the team last year and they were all down and out, but this year they’re all up and about from the start and can tell they’re ready to go.”

The last time Townsville took on Cairns, the northern rivals ended the Cyclones’ perfect season.

They had been near flawless until that point.

“I think a couple of people might’ve been getting too comfortable, but that’s how it is when we are winning all the time, so I guess it was good for us coming into finals” he said.

“We don’t really dwell on those things, we look forward to the next game and go from there.”

The Reef Bowl will begin at 5pm at North Ward Sport Reserve today.
