Loyal workers build success

- TONY RAGGATT

SUN Metals zinc refinery attributes the contribution of long-serving staff to the success of the operation which refines and exports zinc ingots, and extracts other base metals.

Almost 20 per cent of its team has worked with the company for more than 20 years.

Sun Metals chief executive Kiwon Park said the staff made the refinery a great place to work. “We are very proud of the team we have built here at Sun Metals,” Mr Park said.

“I think it is a testament to our culture of mateship that so many have decided to spend most of their career with us.

“Their commitment to Sun Metals, to the Townsville community and to each other is something to be cherished.”

Continuous improvement co-ordinator Norm Ridley has worked at the refinery for almost 22 years. He applied for a role while he was at Kirwan State High School.

“What keeps me coming back is the people I work with. I have made some very good friends who I enjoy working with,” Mr Ridley said.

Refinery technician Rick Statham started as a trainee operator in the Water Treatment Plant.

“I’ve decided to stay at SMC for many reasons. The job was an attractive four-on four-off roster and is located close to home, family and friends,” Mr Statham said. “I also made many new friends and have enjoyed the work.”

Roasting superintendent Chris Doble said he liked the fact that he had been able to live locally and develop some really good workmates.

Electrolysis team leader Ben Lacey started as one of four operator/maintainers after completing a fitter and turner, and armourer trade in the army.

“I was at that time looking for a new challenge and something where I could see growth in potential, not in just myself but the Townsville community,” Mr Lacey said.

Mr Park said the Sun Metals employees volunteered their time to help the community during the 2019

Townsville floods. “It’s that notion of community, and our position within Townsville and North Queensland as well, that makes Sun Metals such a special place,” Mr Park said.
