FORMER Brisbane Broncos star Chris Walker stopped by the Burdekin Roosters Club on Tuesday night as part of a walk to raise funds for several charities.

Walker, who has been walking for 16 days, arrived in the Burdekin on Monday and had spent the past few days talking to locals and raising awareness about the reasons for his walk.

Having started his journey in Cairns alongside Nate Miles, Walker is raising money for Beyond Blue, Alcohol and Drug Foundation, Global Awakening and Rizeup Australia.

He will cover 1757 kilome

tres over 66 days as part of his Walk of a Lifetime challenge and will finish in Surfers Paradise on June 30.

“I arrived in the Burdekin yesterday, we pulled up roughly 30km out of town and we went over the bridge today,” Walker said.

“We have a rule that we run across every bridge, so running across the Burdekin this afternoon wasn’t pleasant after walking 30km.

“Being here with the kids, grassroots rugby league is where I started and it’s been able to give me the opportunity to walk from Cairns to the Gold Coast,” he said.

Walker said he wanted to raise funds for these organisations as a result of the in

creasing number of people seeking their services due to COVID.

“To be able to do this and watch the news and see the doom and gloom that is happening all around the world, I was fed up with it so we came up with a walk from Cairns to Gold Coast and here we are doing it,” he said.

“I hope I can be a pillar of hope for people who are having a hard time during COVID.”
