Olympic now back on track as game plan clicks into gear

- MATTHEW ELKERTON

A CANDID team talk after a gruelling 4-2 loss has sparked a resurgence of form for perennial grand finalists MA Olympic.

The side has been dominant on goal with Monika Andersen and Page Malau-aduli leading the way in a three-match winning streak.

MA Olympic has scored a combined 17 goals in the three games, but it is the zero conceded at the other end of the field that has pleased coach Michael Brooks more.

While the game plan has finally clicked into gear after a sluggish start to the year, Brooks said the side would not get ahead of itself as a grand final rematch against North Queensland Football heavyweights Brothers awaits tonight.

The undefeated Brothers are coming off a dominant 8-0 win over Burdekin last weekend, and remain the standard bearers of the women’s premier league.

“The girls have been working hard and they are in a good frame of mind with a lot of positivity around the side,” Brooks said. “But they have a big challenge ahead in Brothers who are setting the benchmark for the competition.

“After we lost against Warriors, we were a bit disjointed and weren’t on the same page. We had a pretty honest chat about where we were at and what we wanted to get out of the year.

“Since then (the players) have been positive and turning up with a good mindset. We have been focused on our attack and failure we had in capitalising on chances. That better attack then helps our defence.”

The last time the two sides faced off, Brothers made short work of the Olympic outfit 6-1 at Burt Street. But Brooks is adamant that was a different Olympic side that took the field that night, not just in attitude but also personnel. Olympic had about eight of their first choice side out that night, which will not be the case at Hi Vista Park tonight.

Brooks believes he has the calibre of players, and a wellworked game plan to win the day.

“We know how to beat them, we have to score more goals than them,” he said.

“If we play to our potential we are very hard to beat.”
