Man loses temper at Origin
A MOUNT Isa mine worker got so angry during Queensland’s second straight loss to New South Wales in this year’s State of Origin, the mother of his children called the police to have him removed from her property.
The 34-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was heavily intoxicated when police arrived at his former partner’s Bowen home about 9pm on June 27, following reports he was being abusive and refusing to leave.
Bowen Magistrates Court heard the man and woman had both been drinking all day in the lead up to the rugby league match, which the man had come over to watch despite being subject to a court order prohibiting him from attending the woman’s address, except with written permission to visit his children.
Prosecutor Robert Beamish told the court the man had “torn his T-shirt open in anger” after the woman hid his drinks, about 8.20pm, because she believed he had consumed too much alcohol and was behaving “stupid”.
After an argument, the woman fled to the backyard in tears and hid there until police arrived.
The man’s solicitor Peta Vernon told the court her client and the woman had children together during a sevenyear relationship, and the man continued to financially support the children despite living apart from them.
She said the estranged couple had been “trying to work on their relationship”.
Magistrate James Morton said the man should not have attended the woman’s house to watch the game, and fined the man $450 for contravention of a domestic violence order.
No convictions were recorded.
