Twist of fate forges boys’ strong bond

- SAM FLANAGAN

BORN just 90 minutes apart in the same regional NSW hospital five years ago, fate has brought two Townsville boys together and forged a “bond for life” between them.

Crystal Lina took her son Oliver Lyons to Townsville University Hospital last week but never expected what was about to unfold.

“The nurses came around to do his observations the next day and they read out his date of birth,” Ms Lina said.

“A woman in there said ‘so was my son’ after she heard the date. She said she was from NSW and I asked what hospital he was born and she said ‘Gosford’.

“We worked out they were born on the same day, at the same hospital only 90 minutes apart.

“They were then admitted to Townsville hospital only hours apart.”

Ms Lina said Oliver and his long lost “twin”, Deklan Sillero, formed an instant connection. “The two of them have an incredible understanding of each other,” she said.

“From the moment they met it’s like they knew each other. When Oliver was having a procedure done Deklan would come in to see if he was OK and vice versa.

“The two of them bonded so quickly. Anything they did in the hospital they did together.”

Ms Lina said she couldn’t believe the coincidence of the situation.

“There isn’t any way we could have planned it. It was just universal synchronicity,” she said.

“It was one of things that felt like was meant to happen. They were meant to meet.”

Deklan’s mum Shantelle

Watson, who only just moved to North Queensland two months ago, said she had to do a double take when she heard Oliver’s date of birth.

“It was strange, I heard them say it and was thinking they were talking about my boy and they were actually talking about Oliver,” Ms Watson said.

“They’re best friends with each other now. They’re very caring towards each other and always thinking about each other.

“I think they’ll have a bond for life.”

Ms Lina agreed the boys would be as thick as thieves for a long time to come.

“They’ll definitely be mates for life. They caught up last week and Deklan didn’t realise we were coming and he turned around and had tears in his eyes straight away and just hugged Oliver,” she saids.
