Montana the star as slick Swans create slice of history

- NICK WRIGHT

CURRA Swans coach Meg Greenland could not even hear the final siren sound when her side claimed a maiden AFL Townsville title.

What with the emotion of the occasion, and what she had been through with her team, the narrative had come to a euphoric conclusion.

Greenland made a triumphant return to the coaching arena this year, which ended with a 4.5 (29) to 3.1 (19) Swans victory over Hermit Park to claim their first women’s flag.

On the back of a resounding performance from player of the final Montana Dove, the Swans ground out the win against a Tigers side that was gunning for three straight premierships.

Greenland stepped away from coaching the side last year when her partner fell ill and she gave birth to daughter Olivia.

Bringing together a team largely made up of players who were new to Aussie rules was always going to be a challenge, but they rode the highs and lows together in one of the most historic seasons in Curra’s history.

And Greenland said while the Swans were preparing to farewell a host of stars due to work and family movements, she would not hesitate to pick up the whistle and clipboard again.

“I don’t even know how to describe it, it’s kind of surreal,” Greenland said.

“I didn’t even hear the siren go at the end, I just got tackled, and I’m overwhelmingly proud of them to get to where they are.

“When I realised we finally won I was overcome with emotion. I cried a little bit, and they deserved it.

“I was so proud for them they could come away with the win and finish off what has been a stellar season for us.

“All week I’d been pretty emotional about it and I’ve put a lot into this team.

“I also want to inspire and encourage people to take on these roles because you can make such a difference to clubs and individuals.

“I know my team have come from a bunch of strangers at the start of the year to sisters essentially now.

“They’ve done nothing but work really hard.”
