Olympics concerns
TIME is running out to sign an e-petition which draws attention to the negative impacts of hosting the Brisbane 2032 Olympics on regional Queenslanders.
Created in early July by regional economist Colin Dwyer, the Better Deal For Regional Queensland From Brisbane Olympics petition warns that Brisbane’s Games will cost billions in direct and indirect infrastructure that will likely experience large cost overruns, blowing out state debt that will increase taxes and levies.
With two weeks until the petition is tabled and debated in state parliament, it has 1534 signatures.
Mr Dwyer urged decision makers to genuinely consider all Queenslanders as the Brisbane Olympics starts to reprioritise public and private funds/projects, relocate skilled workers and recoup higher taxes.
“There are massive investment requirements for hosting the Olympics from new and refurbished stadiums and venues, to better transport facilities and athletes and spectators accommodation,” Mr Dwyer said.
“Holding minor events in regional centres will not offset the massive drain of skilled workforce from regions to Brisbane to build these facilities.
“Regional Queensland already struggles to get its priorities noticed. The Brisbane Olympics will see crucial regional priorities delayed or possibly cancelled.”
He said the repayment and net tax burden will disproportionately affect people in regional Queensland.
Townsville MP Scott Stewart responded saying the 2032 Olympics were an opportunity for businesses across the state to participate and compete and for our region to showcase its attractions to the world.
“Those opportunities are priceless. Townsville will benefit from the 2032 Olympics with our high performance facilities and world class stadium,” Mr Stewart said.
“There is the opportunity for teams to be based in Townsville prior to the Olympics as well as hosting football matches at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.”
He said the government recognised the need for the games to deliver a legacy for communities across the state, including Townsville.
