House of Prayer turns 40
THE House of Prayer and Spirituality Townsville is celebrating 40 years in 2021. The milestone anniversary is being commemorated by the community with a liturgy, and community events from September 17-19.
“We are delighted to welcome Josephite Sisters Elaine Smith and Carmel Street back to the House of Prayer for our weekend of celebrations,” said Marg Trevethan, House of Prayer and Spirituality Council Chair.
“Sister Elaine and Sister Carmel with Judy Brown and Fr Micky Mullins founded the
House in 1981, so it’s just wonderful they are able to reconnect with others that have been involved since the 80s, as well as current community members who are keeping the spirit of the community alive today,” added Marg.
The celebrations begin on the evening of September 17 with a community gathering and official launch of the journal.
On Sunday, September 19, the Most Reverend Timothy Harris, Bishop of Townsville will preside over the Celebration Liturgy. He will be joined by the Anglican Bishop of
North Queensland, Right Reverend Dr Keith Joseph. Together they will bless those who continue the ministry of the House today. The House will also be blessed, and after the Liturgy those present will gather in the park for lunch.
“The community has much to celebrate,” said Marg.
“We have people travelling from as far as Brisbane including Sister Lyn Stabler, Queensland leader of the Sisters of St Joseph,” she added.
“It is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on our past 40 years as we look forward to the next 40 years,” she said.
“Joan Carmichael Neal has authored an illustrated reflective journal for the 40th celebrations that includes a selection of stories, people and prayer of the 40 years of the House of Prayer and Spirituality,” said Marg.
“The aim of the reflective journal is to reveal the spirit of the house, its origins, vision and philosophy as evidenced through the day-to-day activities. It is not a comprehensive history, merely a window into some aspects of the journey of 40 years,” commented Joan Carmichael Neal, journal author.
The journal invites the reader to reflect on their own spiritual journey as they weave through the 40 year history of stories, photos, memories, information and prayer from a cross section of the community including retreatants, Spiritual Directors, community members, workshop attendees, facilitators, men’s group members, artists, students and more.
The 40th anniversary journals will be available for purchase from the House of Prayer and Spirituality, 17 Thomas St, Pimlico from the September 17 for $20 each. Email houseofprayer@tsv.catholic.org.au to reserve your copies.
