Unvaxxed in the firing line
CHARTERS Towers community leaders have thrown their support behind efforts for the community to seek vaccination for Covid-19.
Mayor Frank Beveridge released a community message days after it was revealed that Charters Towers local government area had the fifth lowest vaccination rate in Queensland. Statistics showed that in Charters Towers only 38.6 per cent of the population aged over 15 had received the first jab and a mere 25.1 per cent were fully vaccinated.
Mr Beveridge said the only way for Charters Towers and the nation to move out of the pandemic was to get as many people as possible vaccinated.
“This is something we all have to deal with. I’ve certainly had mine done and I urge everyone to act,” Mr Beveridge said.
A Charters Towers Regional Council spokesman said the council fully supported the recommendations by government health officials and the vaccination targets that have been set.
“Council is encouraging its people to get vaccinated by allowing them to book appointments during work hours to get their Covid-19 vaccinations,” the spokesman said.
“Council is also encouraging the community to roll up their sleeves and get vaccinated as part of a collective effort by everyone to stop the impact caused by Covid-19.
“All councillors, the CEO and both directors are either fully vaccinated, have had one shot or intend to get vaccinated shortly.”
A Townsville Health and Hospital Service spokesman said there was still time to register for the outreach vaccination clinic coming to Charters Towers.
The Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine will be available at the Arthur Titley Centre at clinics on September 28-30, October 25-26 and November 25-26.
