COMMUNITY GROUPS CAN GO UNDER COVER

- LEIGHTON SMITH skinrepair.net.au

HELP is on the way for Townsville’s community groups being scorched by the harsh sun.

According to the Cancer Council Queensland, melanoma is the second most common cancer to affect North Queensland men and woman, with one of the highest skin cancer rates in the world.

Looking to play its part in a solution, the Skin Repair Skin Cancer Clinic is calling on community groups who spend extended time outdoors to put themselves in the running to secure one of five $1000 marquees being given away.

Medical director of Skin Repair Skin Cancer Clinic Helena Rosengren said the community marquee giveaway aimed to provide community organisations with the necessary sun protection while they enjoy their outdoor activities.

“North Queensland is the skin cancer capital of the world and more than 95 per cent of skin cancer cases are caused by unprotected exposure to UV radiation from the sun, meaning it is a nearly entirely preventable cancer,” Dr Rosengren said.

“We know that sport and recreation is essential for community connection, physical and mental health, but we want to encourage sun safety during these activities.

“The marquee giveaway will help provide shade cover to local community groups so they can enjoy their outdoor activities while staying covered and protected from North Queensland’s harsh UV rays.”

Dr Rosengren said the clinic was encouraging applications from a diverse range of ages, sporting and recreation groups who would benefit from receiving one of the five marquees valued at $1000 each. >>Applications close at
