- CAMERON BATES

AN allegedly drunken motorist facing seven charges after a botched attempt to flee police is just one of nine people arrested in Charters Towers in four days.

Charters Towers police were called to reports of a “suspect vehicle” with a man asleep inside occupying two parking spaces in the Woolworths carpark on Ryan St at 1.31am on Saturday.

Senior Sergeant Neil King said the driver, a 51-year-old man from Alligator Creek, allegedly failed an initial roadside breath test after admitting to having just driven the vehicle.

He said the man was transported to Charters Towers Police Station where he then allegedly refused to co-operate further.

The man was bailed to appear in the Charters Towers Magistrates Court on January 31 for failing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis.

Also scheduled to appear in the same court on the same date is a 22-year-old Charters Towers woman who was charged with driving on a Sper-suspended licence after her Mazda was stopped on Gordon St at 3am on Saturday.

Snr Sgt King said a 44-yearold Charters Towers woman had been charged with allegedly driving with a drug in her system after her Holden Rodeo was stopped on Hick St, Richmond Hill, at 10.52pm on Sunday.

She was issued with a notice to appear in the Charters Towers Magistrates Court on March 14.

A 23-year-old woman from the Far North Queensland town of Yarrabah, meanwhile, will appear in the Magistrates Court on January 31 for allegedly driving on a demerit-suspended licence after her Nissan Pathfinder was stopped on Melville St at 12.30am on Sunday.

She was also charged with alleged drug driving and was remanded at large on that charge to March 14.

Snr Sgt King said a young Charters Towers man, 21, was facing a raft of charges after failing to stop his Daewoo station wagon at 8.45pm on Sunday.

“He failed to stop as directed by police, essentially evade police on Church St, Charters Towers … (and was) later detected on Clara Rd.”

He said the driver had been charged with alleged drink

driving, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle that was both unregistered and uninsured, failing to have a licence, disobeying the speed limit and evading police.

He was bailed to appear in the Charters Towers Magistrates Court on Monday, January 17.

On Monday, a 35-year-old Charters Towers man was charged with driving without a licence after his Ford Falcon was stopped on Dr George Ellis Drive at 3.40am on Monday.

He is scheduled to appear in court on February 14.

Snr Sgt King said a Charters Towers man was charged with disqualified driving after police intercepted his Holden Astra on Gordon St at 8.33am on Tuesday.

He said the man’s licence had been suspended after he

was caught driving at more than 40km an hour above the speed limit.

The man is scheduled to appear in court on March 14.

The high-speed suspension came into effect on September 22, 2021, and was due to expire on March 21.

In a non-driving related incident, police were tasked to take a Charters Towers man, 31, into custody on a return-toprison warrant, finding him on Enterprise Rd, Queenton, on Tuesday night.

“The male was told he was under arrest and he subsequently ran from police, a foot chase ensued and police caught the offender on Vulture St where the offender was taken into custody and charged with obstructing police.”
