Art ready to take flight
THE search is underway for an artist to develop a unique piece of work that will be seen by 1.6 million travellers each year.
Townsville Airport is calling for expressions of interest to create a large-scale work for the new terminal co-ordinator wall, between the refurbished check-in and baggage reclaim areas.
The space has recently been created as part of upgrades at the Townsville Airport terminal.
Artists are being encourage to reflect on North Queensland’s natural and social environment in the work and to use sustainable materials.
Townsville Airport general manager Brendan Cook said he hoped there would be strong interest in creating a statement piece.
“About 1.6 million people normally travel through Townsville Airport each year and this is a wonderful opportunity to shine a light on the region and its cultural heart,” Mr Cook said.
“We have kept the scope broad, so it provides the opportunity for the artist to tap into their creativity and develop a truly special work for this area.”
There will be three stages in the process: initial submissions; concept design – up to three entries will be selected before concept designs are developed; and final selection – an artist will be chosen to complete their work at the terminal.
Initial submissions are open until 28 February, and concept designs from chosen artists are due at the end of March.
A successful concept will be chosen in April, with the intention that the artwork is in place by the middle of the year.
The successful artist will receive a $20,000 fee for the work. Division 3 councillor Ann-maree Greaney will be part of a panel, which includes representatives from the airport, Townsville City Council, galleries and other groups, which will pick the artwork.
“Townsville and North
Queensland is home to many talented artists and this is a fantastic opportunity for a local artist to make their mark and showcase their talent to a very large audience,” Ms Greaney said.
