1440 IVAN THE GREAT Russian Prince

Ivan served as co-ruler and regent for his blind father Vasily II from the mid 1450s until he officially ascended the throne in 1462. During his rule he multiplied the territory of his state through war and the seizure of land.

1645 WILLIAM KIDD Scottish pirate

Kidd was a Scottish sea captain who was commission­ed as a privateer and had experience as a pirate.

He was tried and executed in London in 1701 for murder and piracy after capturing a French ship captained by an Englishman.

1932 PIPER LAURIE American actor

Laurie is known for her roles in the films The Hustler, Carrie, and Children of a Lesser God, all of which earned her Academy Award nomination­s. Laurie won a Golden Globe Award for her role in the cult David Lynch television series Twin Peaks.

1934 BILL BIXBY American actor

Bixby’s film, stage and television career spanned more than three decades. He is known for his roles as Tim O’hara in the television series My Favourite Martian and as Tom Corbett in the sitcom The Courtship of Eddie’s Father.

1940 JOHN HURT English actor

Hurt’s career spanned more than five decades. His film credits include Alien, Midnight Express, The Elephant Man,

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and the Harry Potter series of films. He also played the role of Caligula in the television series I, Claudius.

1959 LINDA BLAIR American actor

Blair played the role of Regan Macneil in the 1973 horror film The Exorcist, for which she won a Golden Globe and earned an Academy Award nomination. The film establishe­d her as a horror icon and she appeared in many more lesser-known movies.

1960 MICHAEL HUTCHENCE

Australian musician

Hutchence co-founded the rock band INXS, which sold more than 75 million records worldwide. He was found dead in a Sydney hotel room in 1997. His death was ruled suicide.
