New venture to be cut above the rest

- TONY RAGGATT

THE blokes of Garbutt rejoice. You now have a cool new barber shop where you can zip in for a “zero fade” with a nip of whiskey or maybe just have a plain old hair cut.

Grandeur Barber has opened in Garbutt Central shopping centre.

Accountant, hairdresser and barber Ola Ammar is behind the venture.

“I think it’s the perfect location,” Ms Ammar said.

“Garbutt and Currajong is a very male oriented area where there’s a lot of industry, panel beaters and tradespeople. People come from all over Townsville go there for their work.”

Ms Ammar is hoping the men will take the opportunity to pop in for a quick haircut or indulge in the full gamut of luxury treatments.

This includes facial waxing, head massage, face shaves and all the latest styles like the zero fade, which as the name suggests is one of the shortage possible haircuts.

The shop has been fitted with a bar and will also soon have colour treatments.

Ms Ammar said they were awaiting approval for its liquor license. They will offer complementary beverages with haircuts as well as use the venue for events.

Geon Property Retail Leasing manager Louise Slater said the shop was the first barber shop ever to trade in the Garbutt centre and had been installed with a very impressive fit-out.

She said Ms Ammar had opened two new sites in

Townsville in recent weeks including Grandeur Barber and the relocation of an existing store within Vincent Market Place.

Ms Ammar operates other barber stores in Currajong, Aitkenvale and Vincent and is considering expansion to Cairns. “Ola moved from inside Vincent Market Place where she has been trading for several years to a brand new shop outside the main doors,” Ms Slater said.

“This all coincides with the opening of The Reject Shop which is taking over 650sq m of internal space. It will open in July, leaving only one internal vacancy in the centre.”

Ms Slater said landlords of both Garbutt Central and Vincent Market Place were elated with the results.

Meanwhile, across from Garbutt Central work is progressing on a new $10m drivethrough development by the Gibb Group. The tenancies being developed include Tasmanian-based bakery cafe group Banjo’s, a Miss Sushi Japanese food bar and a Zambrero Mexican restaurant, as well as a Hoppy’s car wash.
