CRIME SOLUTIONS ARE SIMPLY NOT UP TO IT

-

I refer to the article “Four teenagers admit to violent carjackings” (TB, 20/6): What can one say except welcome to Crimsville where this behaviour is nothing out of the ordinary. It’s just another day at the office, so to speak.

It’s nothing more than anarchy. Law and order has completely broken down, we are living in a lawless society and all that the members of the Palaszczuk-led government can say is that the legislation that they have introduced is working.

The problem with the introduced legislation is, if the published crime figures are correct, the legislation is working for the aggressor not the aggrieved persons.

One would have thought that elected members of a government would or should have a certain level of intelligence.

That being the case, how can any of them or in this case all of them stand in front of a camera and make a statement that the legislation they introduced is working when the crime figures are on a continuous upward trajectory.

The headline in the article and the offences committed demonstrate just how much of a deterrent-effect the legislation is having on criminals and, more importantly, would-be criminals waiting in the wings to come up through the ranks, so to speak.

Criminals fear nothing as there is nothing to fear so crime just continues unabated.

Just the other day our illustrious Premier made comments to the media at a meeting with the new Prime Minister regarding health and her concerns. One has to wonder does her concerns include the Townsville community’s mental wellbeing when four teens involve themselves in violent car jackings, one of which involved the assaulting a 69-year-old person in order to gain his vehicle keys and another event when someone holds a knife at the throat of a 46year-old woman to gain her keys.

Well, Premier, stand by your comments and demonstrate how concerned you are for people’s health (psychological) by implementing laws which have some form of a deterrent attached

to them to stop this anarchy and making the streets safe for lawabiding citizens to go about their business without fear.

DAVID THOUMINE,

Cranbrook.

MAGGIE MONUMENTS

I note MOUA’S response (TB, 22/6) to my June 16 letter regarding safety and protecting Green Zones at Alma Bay.

It’s a pity they mentioned neither. Informing readers that, “We should be proud that our local scientists … will be recognised” assumes that the many objectors do not.

Personally speaking, three of the scientists in the grouping are in fact friends who I greatly admire and respect.

I just don’t think their sculptures should be placed in a Green Zone which are there for a reason: to “(a) Provide for the protection of the natural integrity and values of areas of the Marine Park … and to provide opportunities for certain activities, including the presentation of the values of the Marine Park, to be undertaken in relatively undisturbed areas”.

This does not include tourist attractions, even if it is artworks depicting highly esteemed island scientists.

Protecting Green Zone integrity was a primary reason for Magnetic Island Nature Care’s and that of many locals objections and this will be an important test for GBRMPA to decide on.

Will they defend their zoning rules or cave in to a concerted effort from the big business backers of this tourist attraction?

When it comes to safety: locating a major attraction, set to draw thousands of visitors of all ages and levels of fitness, 200m offshore at a bay which regularly picks up quite hefty swells, without apparently, any extra, safety services, MOUA has only, “discussed the possibility of installing the sculptures with stakeholders such as the surf club”.

Great as the Arcadian lifesavers are, most of the daily guard duties are performed by the council’s life guards.

One wonders how much they welcome an increased responsibility outside of the flags? GEORGE HIRST,

Picnic Bay.

Here we go again 2 per cent rate rise to cover SPIRALLING cost. The only spiralling cost is the massive pay rise they get every year. And they try to sugar coat it by telling you it only $4 a week what really means it $208 a year. WAYNE 4812

With financial service shortfalls for the coming year can the TCC curb more infrastructure in the CBD and concentrate on the suburbs. As letters and texts have shown there is more to Townsville than this particular area. Time to move forward. M J REYNOLDS MT LOUISA

Ron, Kelso – you won’t be able to stick with coal. All the coal plants will be shut down and replaced with cheaper, cleaner, more reliable renewable energy. STEVE, BELGIAN GARDENS

Deputy Mayor claims TCC has delivered 6 surplus budgets and one balanced budget in past 9 years. Yet for 2022-23 budget, Council is borrowing a further $45 million! That sounds like a further $45 million in debt to me. Too tricky. WARWICK, PALLARENDA

I do find it amusing that the same people perpetuating green energy through hydro are the same who have blocked any new or expansion

Obviously those in business are not people. When asked on Tuesday why the government during the 2020 election said they would not raise taxes full stop and now have imposed big taxes on the mining industry. Cameron Dick said the reason is because the promise of no taxes was for the people in Queensland and not those in business. No wonder why with his nose I call him Pinocchio.

of dams for the last 30 years. Yet they rubbish every one else about lack of vision. But now it’s their idea it’s OK. DAN, CRANBROOK.

So the Townsville City Council are battling rising operational costs – no bloody wonder when they employ people who stand at road works in mass with arms folded staring at the passing traffic or the constant parade of council work vehicles up and down the Strand. How about accountability, Jenny? We would like to see the money spent appropriately before you slug us all with rate rises Get your house in order WEEZER, THE STRAND

It’s interesting to see the Mayor and council spending $700k to fund a business case for a new entertainment and convention complex. Cast your minds back to a previous election when the Labor party and TCC were campaigning for our stadium and the LNP’S were proposing an integrated stadium and convention complex. If the council wasn’t so narrow minded then we would have it now! By the way, as the stadium was jointly funded by state and commonwealth governments, how come only the State Govt crest is displayed at the stadium? NEIL, NORTH WARD

Don’t be fooled. Jenny Hill’s Council loudly sprukes that they have only increased rates by 2 per cent. But be warned. Your rate rise could be as much as ten per cent depending on how much your land valuation increased. Not happy Jenny. STEVIE, BELGIAN GARDENS

Noticed $80 million listed in the TCC budget for Lansdown. If that’s how much ratepayers are contributing to this project that is exorbitant. Jenny Hill, please explain! JR, 4810

I am going to buy a new car in 5 to 7 years, so I have decided to curtail the maintenance on the current vehicle. We will see how that goes. Just like renewables v coal fired power stations. AS, 4814
