ENGINES READY, IT’S NEARLY SHOWTIME

- DANIEL SHIRKIE

IT’S almost time for the nation’s best drivers to put the pedal to the metal in Townsville and everything is trending well for this year’s Townsville 500 to be bigger and better than ever before.

That’s according to veteran South Australian driver Nick Percat, who’ll steer Walkinshaw Andretti United’s second car around the track in a few weeks.

“We’re excited to get back up here – everyone loves coming to Townsville, it’s a great circuit and they always put on a great show,” Percat said.

“For us at WAU, especially with car two, it’s covered in the NTI branding, which is also over the circuit, so it looks good.

“It’s definitely exciting to see how we go back on a street track. Both cars were in the top 10 all weekend in Darwin, so we’re feeling really positive and looking forward to getting here.”

The event has been hit by Covid regulations in recent years, but organisers are optimistic that the upcoming race entry will be the best yet, signing marquee talent Hilltop Hoods and once again unfurling the big top to house a number of extra events under it.

“The event’s going to be big here in Townsville, everything we’ve seen so far post-covid has been really positive for the sport,” Percat said.

“The crowds have been up everywhere we go, so I’d say everyone should strap themselves in for a pretty big weekend here.

“It’s great fun to be getting to these events early, seeing the area, doing all these activities early so we can see what each state’s got to offer.”

This year’s Supercars event kicks off on July 8. Tickets are available through Ticketek.
