1470 CHARLES VIII

King of France

Charles reigned over France from 1483 until his death in 1498. Charles conquered the Italian peninsula without much resistance during his reign. He died after striking his head on the lintel of a door at the Chateau d’amboise, where he was born.

1901 WILLIE SUTTON

American bank robber

Sutton stole an estimated $2m during his 40-year robbery career. He spent more than half his adult life in prison, but escaped three times. For his talent of using disguises, he earned the nicknames Slick Willie and Willie the Actor.

1915 GORDON ROWE

New Zealand cricketer

Rowe scored a pair in the only Test match he ever played, making him one of only 10 players to have achieved the unenviable feat. Rowe’s one and only Test was against Australia in Wellington. He was bowled by Bill O’reilly in both innings.

1944 GLENN SHORROCK

Australian musician

Shorrock was the founding member of the bands the Twilights, Axiom, and Little River Band. The Twilights had eight consecutiv­e national hits and Axiom also released top 10 hits. Little River Band had national and internatio­nal chart success.

1960 MURRAY COOK

Australian musician

Cook was one of the founding members of popular children’s band The Wiggles, providing guitar, vocals and songwritin­g skills. He remained involved behind the scenes with The Wiggles after his retirement from the band.

1966 MIKE TYSON

American boxer

Tyson won his first 19 profession­al fights by knockout, 12 of them in the first round. He reigned as the undisputed heavyweigh­t champion of the world from 1987 to 1990. In 1997, he bit off a piece of Evander Holyfield’s right ear.

1985 MICHAEL PHELPS

American swimmer

Phelps is the most successful and most decorated Olympian of all time, with 28 medals. He won a record eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, breaking Mark Spitz’s record.
