Bleriot developed the first practical headlamp for cars and established a profitable business manufacturing them. He used the profits to pursue his aviation exploits. Bleriot was the first person to fly across the English Channel.
1899 INDIANA JONES Fictional character
Dr Henry Walton “Indiana” Jones was a fictional professor of archaeology who first appeared in the 1981 film
Raiders of the Lost Arc. Three more films followed. In 1992, the franchise expanded to television with The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles.
1903 AMY JOHNSON English aviator
Johnson was the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia. Flying solo or with husband, Jim Mollison, Johnson set many longdistance records in the 1930s. She flew as part of the Air Transport Auxilliary during World War II.
1906 ESTEE LAUDER American entrepreneur
Lauder founded her eponymous cosmetics company with her husband, Joseph Lauter (later Lauder). She was the only woman on Time magazine’s 1998 list of the most influential business geniuses of the 20th century.
1949 JOHN FARNHAM Australian singer
Farnham was a teen pop idol from 1967 until 1979, billed then as Johnny Farnham. He has since forged a career as an adult solo artist, although he replaced Glenn Shorrock as lead singer of Little River Band from 1982 until 1985. He was Australian of the Year in 1987.
1961 DIANA SPENCER English Princess
Diana was the first wife of Charles, Prince of Wales – heir apparent to the English throne – and mother of princes William and Harry. Diana’s death in a car crash in Paris in 1997 led to extensive public mourning and global media attention.
