Walkers get new track on Maggie
A NEW walking track on Magnetic Island has opened, giving tourists and locals a new spot to explore the tropical landscape.
The walk, from the new Forts Complex to Florence Bay, offers a new familyfriendly, 1km-long track.
Townsville MP Scott Stewart said it was important to invest in the region’s tourism crown, and help grow experiences on the island.
“While walking the new trail, visitors will be immersed in the island’s unique granite boulder-strewn landscape and will have the opportunity to see some of the island’s resident koalas,” he said.
“The new track opens up a range of different routes for walkers to experience within the national park, linking existing tracks to allow a range of new loops back to the Forts Junction and Horseshoe Bay.”
Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon said the new track was a major milestone in the Palaszczuk government’s investment in Magnetic Island National Park’s visitor infrastructure, now in its third year of implementation.
“The aim of the investment is to enhance visitor experience while continuing to protect the key environmental and cultural values on Magnetic Island (Yunbenun),” she said.
“This also includes the $2.8m upgrade to the Forts Junction Hub, which was completed last year, as well as upgrades to other walking tracks on the island including the popular Nelly Bay to Arcadia track.
“With around 100,000 visitors walking to the forts each year, this new track will be very popular and a valuable addition to the Magnetic Island walking track network.”
