Solar saves schools money
MORE than 8400 solar panels have been installed at Townsville state schools to help slash electricity costs and cut carbon emissions.
Education Minister Grace Grace said the Advancing Clean Energy Schools (ACES) program was expanded in February 2022 and had exceeded targets to deliver more panels at more schools than originally planned.
“The completion of the $168 million ACES program is a testament to the Palaszczuk Government’s strong focus on creating good jobs and better services to enhance our great Queensland lifestyle,” Ms Grace said.
Thuringowa MP Aaron Harper said the program was good news for schools and great news for the Palaszczuk Government’s renewable energy target.
Mundingburra MP Les Walker said the 8400 panels in Townsville alone could generate about 12,000kw of electricity every day.
Townsville MP Scott Stewart said the completion of the ACES program took advantage of one of the city’s biggest assets.
“With Townsville’s amazing sunny weather, solar power has been well and truly embraced here,” Mr Stewart said.
“This program will help our schools become more energy efficient and shows students the benefits of sustainability in a practical way.”
The Willows State School had 593 solar panels installed which will offset the costs of airconditioning and other energy costs in a $440,000 investment.
Principal Michelle Donn said the school was delighted with the new solar panels, which can generate an average of 870kw ofelectricity every day.
“The ACES program has delivered both exceptional energy and cost savings to our school,” Ms Donn said.
