Bold is beautiful in Cup fashion trends

- NATASHA EMECK

FASHIONISTAS are champing at the bit for the return of one of the biggest events on the NQ social calendar – the TAB Townsville Cup.

With $10,000 in prizes to be won, the Fashions on the Field competition will be hotter than ever when racegoers head to Cluden Park for Cup Day on Saturday, August 6.

Fashions on the Field judge Emily Ingham said the Cluden Park Winter Racing Carnival was the perfect time for locals to indulge their inner fashionista.

“Paying attention to the small things and details like jewellery, matching certain metals on your handbags can really set you apart,” she said.

“Don’t be afraid to be a bit more quirky and think outside the box rather than sticking to your typical, traditional race wear.

“It’s always cool to see something different and adventurous.”

Ms Ingham, a fashion illustrator who’s captured the attention of the likes of Rihanna and Meghan Trainor, said bold colours were a “big thing” this year.

“Rather than pastel tones, I think people are going more for the vivid colours,” she said.

“A lot of designers like Leo Lin are going with strong colours like greens and reds.

“The headwear was a lot more subtle last year, whereas this year, I think everyone’s going a bit more out there with florals and oversized bows.”

Townsville-based fashion stylist Amelia Clements said bold green, fuchsia, neons and dual tone were on trend in fashion this year, and she was looking forward to seeing how racegoers incorporated that in their Cup Day outfits.

“I’m looking forward to seeing bright colours, a lot of dual tones, fascinators and much bigger hats this year,” she said.

“We’ve also been very intentional this year in supporting local designers and boutiques.

“I think it’s important to support local retailers because they rely on these days, and it boosts the local economy.”

She said the prize pool for fashions on the field at the Townsville Cup would be $10,000 – one of their largest yet for the event.

“So putting that extra effort in your outfit will definitely be rewarded this year,” she said.

Cluden Park general manager, Natalie Rintala, said while tickets for Cup Day were selling quickly there were still some tents up for grabs.

“There’s still tickets available in the Canadian Club zone and again the Figtree lawns will be the centre of activity for the Townsville Cup and we certainly encourage people to get online and grab those tickets,” she said.
