Postcode figures reveal the great Aussie divide

- HAMISH SPENCE

THERE are vast discrepancies between the country’s richest and poorest postcodes, according to the latest figures from the Australian Taxation Office.

The statistics, which are compiled from the 2019-20 tax returns of more than 14 million Australians, show Cottesloe and Peppermint Grove residents in Western Australia (postcode 6011) made a whopping $325,343 on average in taxable income.

The figure represents a staggering growth of more than 80 per cent from the 2018-19 figures, when the famous seaside spot for the rich and famous came in sixth.

It’s the first time a postcode’s average taxable income has reached $300,000.

The result is a far cry from postcode 5013 in Adelaide’s north (Gillman, Ottoway, Pennington, Rosewater and Rosewater East), which had a negative average taxable income of $7906.

The rest of the country’s top 10 richest postcodes were dominated by some of the most exclusive spots across Sydney.

Postcode 2027 (Darling Point, Edgecliff and Point Piper) came in second with an average taxable income of $205,957, postcode 2023 (Bellevue Hill) finished third with $195,204 and postcode 2030 (Dover Heights, Rose Bay North, Vaucluse and Watsons Bay) was fourth at $186,025.

Melbourne was the only other city that cracked the top 10, with Hawksburn and Toorak (postcode 3142) coming in at No.5 with an average taxable income of $184,939.

Other Sydney suburbs that made up the remaining five postcodes included Mosman, Split Junction, Hunters Hill and Northbridge.

But the same level of wealth was not shared in regional parts of the state, with NSW areas making up five of the top 10 poorest postcodes.

Postcode 2398 (Gurley), postcode 2386 (Burren Junction, Drildool and Nowley) and postcode 2405 (Boomi and Garah) made up the top three respectively.

These areas all had a negative average taxable income, which was likely associated with farming losses.

Postcode 2397 (Bellata, Jews Lagoon and Millie) and postcode 2873 (Albert, Five Ways, Miamley and Tottenham) were the other NSW locations featured.

The rest of the top 10 was mainly rural postcodes in South Australia and Queensland.

A taxpayers funded deterring driving program will teach juvenile thugs the art of zip lining and abseiling to show them they can get their thrills by other means than joyriding in stolen cars and burning them? Funny how people only take certain facts out of a story .eg coral reef regrowth .Substantial amounts of regrowth r in far northern areas where it is less populated, no farms and no fertiliser run-off.

Not 2 mention every time a harvester blows a hydraulic hose it loses about 60 litres of oil directly into soil, multiply by 4 to 5 hoses by 500 harvesters in NQ, no spill kit required like other industries .Have a look in our drains in wet season an c 4 urself the run off. T.E. 4850.

We need to send a search party or for Judge Lynham who has lost touch with reality. When he says that a 14 year old but already seasoned criminal was offending to prove he was a man, then decides not to convict him. The judge just confirms that this kids right of passage is on track.

Please help us find the lost judge and reunite him with reality. MOUSE, WOODSTOCK

Once again the little crims are going to be rewarded for their criminal activities, which don’t seem to be working. Their activities are getting worse. What about the low income law obiding families with children who would love to do these activities.

Do the parents say to their children, “sorry we can’t afford these activities for you, just go and steal a few cars and terrorise the town.” Agree with you Fred Pimlico

Well buggar me the reef has had a god given Miracle!

You would think that with all the blame on climate change and primary producers that if the science was correct that the reef would only get worse not better.

The blameless farmers have been copping it over the yrs by a government that’s hell bent on destroying agriculture. So yes it’s a bloody miracle! SAM 4850
