Curry’s big fear

-

Swimming champion Lisa Curry fears Australia’s newest golden girl in the pool, Emma Mckeon, is facing a backlash.

Mckeon has blitzed the field at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, and was one of the most decorated athletes at the Tokyo Olympics, winning four gold medals.

Curry, who was eliminated from Ten’s The Masked Singer on Monday, said: “I did have a little chuckle when I saw Emma Mckeon on the front page of Woman’s Day (magazine) and I thought, ‘If only you knew what’s coming, because I’ve been through it all.”

Asked “what’s coming,” Curry replied: “Oh, everything.

Whatever they can manufacture, they will throw at the person that’s the flavour of the moment.

“You’ve got to have big shoulders, and it’s different these days in the world of social media, which we didn’t have back in my day.

“We were kind of protected. But, back in the day we had no right of response. We could never come out and say, ‘Hang on a minute that’s not true, whereas these days, you can.

“I just hope they’re respectful to all the athletes because we don’t ask to be role models. We just do what we do, which is swim from one end to the other as fast as we can.”

Curry said she felt sorry for Kyle Chalmers, who made headlines after his ex, Mckeon, found new love with pop star turned swimmer Cody Simpson.

Chalmers and Simpson competed in the pool at Birmingham.

“It’s media driven drama, but what most people don’t understand it does affect the swimmers,” Curry said.

“Poor old Kyle Chalmers says he went from poster boy to villain, and it’s just not the case.”

Curry sang Tones And I’s hit Cloudy Day on The Masked Singer disguised as a caterpillar.
