TRIBUTES POUR IN FOR MCCARRON

- PATRICK WOODS

TRIBUTES are flowing for local cricketing icon Stephen Mccarron after his death on Thursday morning.

Norths president Bing Balanzategui honoured Mccarron (pictured) as a pillar of Townsville’s sporting community who was a true clubman.

“Steve was a fantastic guy. He’s battled with illness his whole life and he was a fantastic cricketer, fantastic all-round sportsman, I remember watching him when we were at school and he looked like Greg Chappell batting,” Balanzategui said.

“He was a cornerstone of Norths for a very, very long time. He was treasurer, president, secretary, junior vice-president, you name it, he did it. He coached nearly every grade in the juniors, he captained our senior sides, and yeah, he was just a fantastic guy who did everything for the club and for his kids and for his wife.”

Balanzategui will be conducting a tribute for Mccarron this Sunday at 8.30am before the Tropical Big Bash matches at Endeavour Park.

A minute’s silence will be observed at 9.15am before the match.

The Norths president said that anyone who wished to show their respects for Mccarron is welcome to attend the tribute.

“I’d like to see the whole Townsville cricket community there, because everybody who has played against Steve would see how much of a gentleman he was on the field as well as a fierce competitor,” Balanzategui said.

“So it’s for everybody because he would have touched a lot of people’s hearts along the way. He was a mentor to a lot of young people along the way, and it’s just very sad.

“Not only did he have a big influence on cricket, there’s touch football, there’s rugby union and AFL, soccer – the boys played soccer as well – Steve touched a lot of hearts in Townsville, I can tell you that.”

In a social media statement, former teammate and club senior registrar Matt Grant called Mccarron a ‘statesman of the game’ who always played to the highest of his ability.

“It is with tremendous sadness that we honour the life of Norths life member Steve Mccarron. Our thoughts are with Tracey, Ryan, Beau and Zoe in this difficult time,” Grant wrote. “It was an honour and a privilege to play alongside Steve – both as his captain and he, mine.

“He was always a statesman of the game and played it to the highest of ability, even though he would always say that he was average and was just getting lucky.

“I was also very happy that he was able to play senior cricket with Ryan and would have loved to play with Beau as well.

“I’m sure much more will be said in the coming days, weeks and years, but thank you Steve, it was an honour.”
