Miners determined to show fans what they’re made of
THE CHARTERS Towers Miners have a point to prove when they run out against Herbert River on Saturday afternoon at Bill Lewis Oval.
A Brothers win in Friday night’s game against the Lions would guarantee Charters Towers a semi-final spot, but coach Shaun Casey says the team will relish the opportunity to put on a show for their fans in their final home game of the season.
“It’s a good opportunity for us to show our supporters, our sponsors and everyone else, exactly what we’re capable of,” Casey said.
“Obviously winning a few
more games this year and being in finals contention and playing entertaining footy, the crowds are certainly bigger this year than in the last few seasons.
“This is going to be our last home game of the year, and at home we’re going out to win it so we’re certainly not going to just turn up and go through the formalities.”
Casey says it doesn’t matter who their opposition is going to be in any potential finals matches, he wants his team to focus on controlling their own game and playing to the potential he knows they can reach.
“Our for-and-against is fantastic. Our attack is the second best in the league and our defence is third best in the league. We’ve just lost a couple of close matches and that’s why we sit where we are on the ladder,” Casey said.
This is the coach’s first year coaching in the Townsville District competition, though he played for Charters Towers 15 years ago.
“It’s a young group and they’re a good bunch of lads, they’re eager to perform. The effort they’ve put in all year has been absolutely fantastic,” Casey said.
“This year it’s a very open comp, and on any given day any of those top five or six teams can beat each other.
“That’s reflective of Centrals giving Brothers a touchup a few weeks ago, and on the weekend River beat Brothers – they’ve beaten them twice this year.”
The Miners game kicks off at 5:30pm Saturday at Bill Lewis Oval in Charters Towers.
