Johnston ‘never a real hope’ of playing

- MARTIN GABOR KENNAR’S VOW P112

THE Rabbitohs’ Alex Johnston has been ruled out of tonight’s preliminary final against Penrith with a hip-flexor injury.

It means Richie Kennar will play just his second NRL match of the season on the left wing where he’ll go up against Panthers flyer Charlie Staines.

Johnston is one of the quickest players in the game but not even he and his 166 tries could win the race against the clock after he limped off during last week’s big win over Cronulla.

He did some light jogging at a fitness test during du Friday’s captain’s capta run but didn’t did do enough to convince coach c Jason

D e m e t r i o u that t he could play. p

“He was never nev really going to be a chance to p l a y , but we gave ga him every opportunity,” Demetriou said.

“If we get the job done, he’ll be back next week. The boys pretty much knew that he was racing the clock.

“It was based on today. We gave him every opportunity and we gave him a chance today. He can run, but he’s got pain. We can’t afford a winger coming off the field. We made the right decision so we move on. I’m sure he’s gutted but he’s putting the team first.”

In better news, Demetriou said backrower Jai Arrow was “sweet” after overcoming a groin injury to take part in most of Friday’s session.

Johnston’s absence means Kennar will run out on the wing having not played a first grade game since round 17 when he scored three tries against the Knights.

Kennar, 27, has been in and out of the NRL since making his debut in 2015 but his coach has faith he can handle the occasion and provide strong carries coming out of trouble in greasy conditions at Accor Stadium.

“I’m really happy for Richie to get an opportunity,” Demetriou said.

“I think the game suits him. It’s going to be physical and physicality’s not AJ’S strength so it’s a bit of a win there.

“He’s been awesome for us throughout the year and he really fits into our culture. The boys love him here and you could tell when I told the boys that he was playing just how excited they were.

“He won’t let us down. He’s 27, so he’s been around the traps and knows what it’s about. He’s not going to be overawed.

“He’s really good in the air which is going to be important dealing with Nathan’s (Cleary) kicking game.”
