Parents brace for tragic details
THE SHATTERED parents of Australian rugby league player Liam Hampson will be given a private briefing on Monday on the report into his death in Barcelona.
News Corp understands Liam’s mum Lorna Morton and his dad Brett Hampson and stepmum Jamie Hampson will be told their 24year-old son did not suffer when he plunged more than 10m to his death at the Sala Apolo nightclub.
Officials from the High Court of Catalonia will explain he died on impact and which bones he broke before the Hampson’s view his body and consent to toxicology examinations being carried out.
“We are expecting to make contact with Liam’s family on Monday and will endeavour to explain exactly how he died,” spokeswoman for the High Court of Catalonia, Lydia Garrida, said.
“Once they have seen the body we can commence the second part of the investigations in the laboratory, the medical examinations.
“The results of these tests will take roughly 10 days.
“We believe it’s a very sad accident and our thoughts go out to the family.”
In a fresh and poignant social media post, Hampson’s grandfather said the family was “broken”.
“My family is broken … I don’t know how to fix it,” John Lindsay said.
Mr Lindsay, a musician, goes on to play a song he recorded in the Redcliffe Dolphins hooker’s honour, saying “all I know is music … his life cut much too short.”
He sings: “I miss you so much, I can’t stand it, it feels like my heart is broken in two.
“When will the pain end, I can’t stand it anymore.”
Meanwhile, Spanish Police have finished their investigation into Hampson’s death last Tuesday morning, declaring it an accident.
They said he found himself
locked out of the club after going through emergency exit doors in search of a bathroom.
That led him to a cordoned off terrace where he urinated before jumping over a short
wall and falling to his death.
He was found 30 hours later.
Mr Hampson had been enjoying the trip of a lifetime through Europe with a group
of rugby league mates, stopping off at Oktoberfest in Germany, Positano and the Amalfi Coast in Italy, Paris and Switzerland before arriving in Barcelona.
