Fun at the parade

- STEVE PRICE

Ilove a Parade! The colour, the laughs, the families, the reflection of life in the city they love. Yes I know, it takes a few weeks of feverish work, sore thumbs, and arguments too. What wonderful enjoyment for those who line the streets, seeing the terrific outfits, copping the occasional splash of water and grabbing, or ducking the launched lollies as well.

It’s what a festival parade is, any festival, sadly not here though, pity, maybe one day. Although north and south we have some beauties, Ayr Water Fest parade is one of the best in the country, when it happens again after Covid, and the Ingham Maraka Fest Parade is truly brilliant.

My girl Barb and I were in Ingham for the Fest, and thankyou to all my Ingham mates for the fine welcome……. and food!

My little broadcast area was a mini deli thanks to JK’S.

Last Saturday was amazing, we began at 9am with the Pet Parade, and thanks to the little horsey dropping fertiliser on my feet, and yes I was wearing crocs, so it went right through.

A bloke laughed and said ‘Hey Pricey, everyone else does so why not a horse’ fair point.

There were bearded dragons with top hats, dogs in dresses, and a little lamb with wool sprayed green, the latter being very fortunate to make it home to Bullock Creek Station, my lovely Greek girl was eyeing it off and named it ‘Souvlaki’.

Well done to all the kids in the Parade and those who did the fence painting which was absolutely huge, also remarkable was how Mum and Dad got the kids to get out of bed so early.

Driving through Ingham to see some mates, we came across some hard working teachers and parents putting the final touches on the positively brilliant float, from Our Lady of Lourdes. They were simply the happiest people, here it is a hot Saturday morning, and the work involved with this float, helicopter and all, was huge.

Nothing deterred them, other than me interrupting and nearly being handed a hammer, except to their horror, I didn’t know how to use one.

The theme was ‘Saluting Their Service’ and they had the kids faces over the soldiers faces on the side of the float. Speaking of hot days, while I was working…ok…having a good time, the 3RAR soldiers were out in the heat rehearsing the Freedom Of

The City traditional march for that afternoon.

Well done to Commander Chris Johnson and all from 3RAR, sensational to see you part of the Hinchinbrook Shire Maraka.

Can we reinvent a Parade for our great city? The Pacific festival was magnificent, but it’s over. Maybe a Parade for NAFA, but that’s an arts fest, not a lifestyle fest, but we could expand it I guess.

Are parades a thing of the past, and too much work, obviously not for

Ingham and Ayr and many cities world wide.

Change it maybe, to a Mango Parade, Christmas Parade, a Tropical Parade, a Sunshine Parade, a Monsoon Parade, a Toad Parade, they’re always on the road.

AS General Roger Noble famously said ‘The Strand is without a doubt the best Military Parade Route in the world’, so why not a parade of silliness, colour and fun.

Happy Days
