ARCADIAN SHINES AT NORTHERN SURF TITLES

- PATRICK WOODS

TOWNSVILLE’S own Arcadian Surf Life Saving Club has won the Masters pointscore and finished third overall at the 2022 North Australian Surf Life Saving Championships held in Mackay over the weekend.

Members of the local club joined more than 500 competitors from as far south as Hervey Bay and as far north as Port Douglas for three days of life saving events.

Nippers right through to Masters age groups took part in events including beach sprints, belt rescues, ski, surf ironman and pool rescues.

Tracey Stone from Arcadian SLSC said the highlight of this year’s event was having so many club members involved.

“The ‘North Aussies’ was fantastic for our club – we had the biggest team we’ve ever had, and everyone from our juniors right through to masters put in so much effort,” Stone said.

“We were all saying on the weekend that it was Arcadian village, it took a village to get us all there and get us all through and we’re very proud of our team.

“It’s a real community that we have at Arcadian, and we were all so proud to see it come together in Mackay.”

At the end of the weekend, Emu Park SLSC was crowned overall pointscore winners, with Cairns SLSC second and Arcadian third.

Surf Life Saving Queensland Sport Manager Stuart Hogben said it was fantastic to bring together so many clubs from the northern regions of Queensland.

“The conditions were very warm, the sun was shining and it was great to see so many smiles on the faces of everyone involved,” Hogben said.

“A big thank you to all the volunteers and officials who make events like this possible, we couldn’t do it without you.

“And congratulations to the clubs and competitors, and a special mention to our overall pointscore winners Emu Park SLSC.”
