New program of events set to be a show-stopper

-

THE Burdekin’s signature destination event will return next year with a two-day program of main events at the Home Hill Showgrounds on 26-27 May 2023.

The Sweet Days, Hot Nights Festival’s headline events have been combined for the first time, with the Burdekin Cultural Fair now set to feature the iconic First Fire on the night of Friday 26 May and the Australian Hand Cane Cutting Championships on Saturday 27 May.

Burdekin Mayor Lyn Mclaughlin said the condensed format would allow those travelling from out of town to attend both events.

“In the past, the Sweet Days, Hot Nights Festival spanned three days with the First Fire on a Thursday night, Burdekin Cultural Fair on the Friday and Australian Hand Cane Cutting Championships on the Saturday – however by combining the Burdekin Cultural Fair and First Fire to both be held at the Home Hill Showgrounds on the Friday night, we’re making it easier for the growing number of people who are travelling from outside our Shire to attend this unique North Queensland event,” Cr Mclaughlin said.

The fair will now feature a selection of performances and food from around the word, set against the backdrop of the first cane fire of 2023’s crush.

“Council are also inviting the community to take ownership of their festival, with businesses encouraged to get in the spirit in the lead up to the events – more information on shop front competitions will be released in early 2023,” Cr Mclaughlin said.

The Sweet Days, Hot Nights Festival will take over the Home Hill Showgrounds with the Burdekin Cultural Fair featuring First Fire on Friday 26 May and Australian Hand Cane Cutting Championships on Saturday 27 May 2023.
