Mindless vandals don’t care who is hurt

-

THEY don’t care who you are or what you do. They don’t give a stuff if you’re from the top end of town or a suburban battler. Or even if you worked your butt off for years and saved your hard earnings just so you can build something from scratch that might help repay the community in which you live.

The latter sums up Townsville small business owner Evelyn Billy whose Torres Strait and Aboriginal cuisine food truck, Bina’s Kitchen, was trashed recently by vandals.

She was heartbroken to discover the van she had toiled so hard to buy and modify was targeted, sustaining thousands of dollars in damage.

“I just wanted to do something to help the community because the school does so much for these kids so I gave them the van free of charge since they don’t have a tuckshop,” she said.

“That’s why it breaks my heart to see what happened to the van. It’s not just impacting me and my business but the kids go without too. “

The van’s back door was broken open and fuel had been poured “everywhere inside”. But Ms Billy said potentially valuable items were ignored.

“That’s why I think it was just bored kids who did it,” she said. “If they’ve got any sense, they should see we’re helping their community and don’t do stuff like that. But apparently they don’t care who you are, whether you’re white or black — they’ll destroy and damage your things.”

It might just be bored kids, but this city knows who quickly young offenders’ crimes can escalate without early intervention.
