Opportunity to catch iconic tourism venture

BARRA FUN PARK ON THE MARKET

- TONY RAGGATT

ONE OF the region’s iconic tourism ventures could soon be under new ownership.

The Townsville Barra Fun Park is being marketed for sale through Colliers Townsville at a time when there is strong demand for property and tourism assets.

Colliers associate director Angelo Castorina said the park had an interesting history and a variety of features.

“The Barra Fun Park has been operating for 23 years and has no competitor in Townsville,” Mr Castorina said.

“It offers ‘catch and release’ barramundi fishing for large barra — 3kg to 20kg — and for smaller barra — 1kg to 3kg — cable skiing, inflatable water park with jumping pillow, stand-up paddle boards, and a 50m Slip ‘n’ Slide.

“It has a cafe with a fully licensed bar, barbecue facilities, aqua golf and school camp facilities.”

Mr Castorina said its Big Barra Dam stocked the largest barramundi in a privately owned storage that were available for capture in Australia.

The fish measured up to 120cm — a size now rarely seen or caught in the wild.

Mr Castorina said the owners chose to operate the park between September to April and had the ability to trade every day during the school holidays between 7am and 9pm.

“The park has a large amount of repeat clientele and also caters for school camps and weddings.,” Mr Castorina said.

The licensed area covers the full 25 acres of the property.”

The property comprises 10.47ha of land fronting Allambie Lane, Kelso.

It began as an aquaculture farm, growing barramundi and red claw.

Mr Castorina said there was an opportunity to further expand the business.

“There are six dams currently not being used which could be reinstated to expand the existing fun park component of the business or to incorporate an aquaculture business,” he said.

“There is also the opportunity to develop the vacant land on the property for possible expansion for a caravan park, subject to council approval.”

Structural improvements include a fully equipped catering kitchen, two-bedroom manager’s flat, kiosk, amenities block, shed and five-bedroom home.

Infrastructure includes a 30Kw solar system, two bores, pump and irrigation systems.

The assets include the Big Barra Dam, Family Fishing Dams, two Cable Ski dams, an inflatable water park dam, six unused dams and lagoon used for water storage. The property is being offered for sale by private treaty.
