Substation to get a $30m makeover
TOWNSVILLE’S old outdoor electricity substation in Garbutt is coming down to be replaced by a new $30m hub to be installed inside a new building with the latest technology.
But it is a long and involved project which will take three more years to complete.
Ergon Queensland chair Sarah Zeljko, CEO Rod Duke and Townsville MP Scott Stewart marked the launch of construction of the new bulk supply substation on Friday.
The substation receives high voltage electricity from Powerlink’s transmission systems and converts it into medium voltage power which is them distributed through the poles and wires and underground cables to some 55,000 homes and businesses around the region.
Mr Stewart said the project from planning and design to construction and commissioning was supporting 180 jobs.
“We are replacing the substation with the latest and greatest technology. It’s about looking after the infrastructure we need into the future,” Mr Stewart said.
“While it is impressive the substation has stood the test of time, much of the existing infrastructure and equipment is due for retirement and will be replaced with new, modern 66kv gas insulated switchgear.”
The substation off Dalrymple Rd has been a feature of the skyline since 1958 with its transformers, insulators and cabling installed outdoors so the air provides its main insulation.
Mr Duke said the new substation would have the latest, more compact gas-insulated switching gear to be installed inside a new building to protect it from elements.
“It’s a really important piece of infrastructure that connects the Powerlink transmission systems to the distribution systems that takes the electricity supply safely, reliably and affordably to the homes and businesses of the people who live in the Townsville area,” Mr Duke said.
Civil contractor A Gabrielli Constructions is well under way developing the new substation building.
Later this month, work will begin to install a new section of high-voltage underground cable underneath Woolcock and Hugh St near Mcdonald’s restaurant to connect to the substation.
This work is to be done outside peak traffic times to minimise disruption.
The new substation is due to be completed in December 2025.
