Super Sam to skipper team

- PATRICK WOODS

ONE of Townsville’s most promising cricketers, Sam Lowry, will captain the North Queensland Country team this weekend in a threematch series against South Queensland Country in Mackay.

Lowry was awarded the Sam Scuderi Medal for Townsville’s A-grade cricketer of the year in 2021-22, and has again been a standout this season for Western Suburbs.

It will be the fourth consecutive year Lowry skippers the side, and he said he was excited to lead the team for another series.

“We have a fantastic group of blokes in the North Queensland Country team and it’s always good to play with guys who are keen to progress their game at these types of weekends,” Lowry said. “I’m looking forward to seeing my good mate Jake

Roach from Cairns play. He’s obviously a frequent flyer in the Queensland Country team and the North Queensland Country team.

“He’s just hitting his straps and he’ll be ready to dominate this weekend.”

Four Townsville Cricket players were selected in the NQ Country rep team, with Lachlan Ford, Craig Mcelligott and Justin Dixon joining Lowry.

North Queensland Cricket manager Antony Stewart said it was a final chance for the players to put their hands up for selection in the Queensland Country team.

“It’s the best against the best, which allows these guys to try to take their game to the next level,” Stewart said.

“There’s plenty on the line with Queensland Country selection, and it will be especially exciting for Lachlan Ford who can learn a lot being in this environment. Looking at club form and the NQ team from the Zone Championships, you can see the Townsville players are bringing good form into the game.”

The two country-based teams will play a T20 on Friday night before one-day matches on Saturday and Sunday.

Chloe Murphy and Grace Abdy will represent the region in the women’s open team, while five young Townsville Cricket players were selected for a non-playing NQ Country U21 team.
