Tricology on track for five in a row
SPRINTER HITS TOP FORM FOR WEHLOW
FORMER Brisbane sprinter Tricology will be out to maintain his unblemished record for Rockhampton trainer Jared Wehlow when the four-year-old makes his Townsville debut at Cluden Park on Tuesday.
Tricology was previously trained by Kelly Schweida at Eagle Farm in Brisbane and is leased off Ron and Judy Wanless by Wehlow and his wife Alisha.
He was originally trained in Victoria by Peter Moody, winning a maiden at Pakenham last year, but after six starts was moved on to Schweida, who had him for a further three starts.
Since making the move into Wehlow’s yard, Tricology has won all four starts, winning twice at Mackay and has a similar number on his home turf in Rockhampton.
The son of Irish stallion Belardo is attempting to stretch his winning sequence for Wehlow to five in the Benchmark 70 Handicap over 1609 metres on Tuesday.
Tricology has an unblemished record over 1600 metres, winning at his second start for Wehlow at Rockhampton’s Callaghan Park on October 27 and at his last start on his home ground on November 17.
His other wins for Wehlow were over 1800 metres, when he was successful firstup for the stable at Mackay on October 1, and in a Benchmark 60 over the same trip at Mackay on November 10.
Wehlow – who grew up on the Atherton Tablelands – has booked heavyweight rider Ash Butler, who has a proven record with two wins from as many rides aboard Tricology.
“He’s shown a lot of ability since he’s come up here,” Wehlow said of Tricology.
“He doesn’t win by a big margin but he gets the job done.
“I think there’s more improvement to come from him and he’s in good form and on the way up.
“He just loves racing.” Wehlow has been training for 12 years and is hopeful of producing his best training performance this season.
He is currently in the top 20 trainers in the Queensland trainers’ premiership with 19 wins and is within striking distance of beating his record of 37 wins in a season. Last season, Wehlow fell short of his training record in a season with 31 wins while this season his 19 wins have come from 67 starts for a winning strike rate of 28.4 per cent.
“Things are moving along very well at the moment after a slow start to the season,” he said.
“We moved a few horses on and things since have been going well.”
