Appeal for candidates
Qld panel roles finally advertised
QUEENSLAND’S long-awaited and much anticipated Racing Appeals Panel has advertised for candidates, as the clock ticks on when it will be operational.
Racing Minister Grace Grace announced last December that the Appeals Panel would be established and replace all Queensland Racing Integrity Commission internal reviews and the majority of QCAT appeals.
The current system, the laughing stock of Australian racing for many years, is beset with red tape, causing huge backlogs and appeals staying in the system for months and, in some cases, years.
Grace last week refuted suggestions that the Appeals Panel would be delayed until later this year – however it has taken until this week for positions to be advertised, with expressions of interest now called for.
Job advertisements for the panel are calling for a chairperson, two deputy chairpersons and panel members.
Advertisements for the chairperson and deputy chairpersons positions require “a lawyer of at least five years’ standing”.
Panel members must “demonstrate professional experience in one or more of the following areas: chemistry relating to animals, law, racing and veterinary science”.
“The Panel will commence operations when the legislative amendments commence on a date to be set by proclamation,” the job advertisement says.
“The Panel will replace the current internal and external review processes. It will finalise review applications within the prescribed time frames; and ensure racing decisions are made in accordance with the law and the Rules of Racing to maintain the integrity of the racing industry in Queensland.”
Meanwhile, with the Gold Coast grass track out of action for a $63m redevelopment, Doomben will host next month’s rich Queensland Jewel race day.
The March 18 Jewel meeting will be hosted at the Brisbane Racing Club for the first time and will be headlined by the $500,000 2YO QTIS Jewel and 3YO QTIS Jewel.
“This is the Queensland industry’s race day and we look forward to showcasing the best local breeders, trainers and jockeys at Doomben,” BRC boss Tony Partridge said.
