Driven to the brink

TC on Broncos thin ice

- TRAVIS MEYN

BRISBANE forward Teui ‘ TC’ Robati is facing the sack following a series of alleged offfield incidents that have again put the spotlight on the Broncos’ behaviour.

Robati is reportedly facing serious disciplinary action from the Broncos after last week being charged with unlicensed driving.

The Australia Day driving charge came while Robati was stood down from NRL duties due to another police charge that is before the courts.

The Broncos declined to comment on Robati’s latest charge, other than to say he remains stood down from club commitments.

Robati, 21, is now fighting for his NRL future on the back of the most recent alleged driving offence, for which he will face court on March 2.

The outcome of that case could have serious ramifications for Robati’s NRL future, given his history.

In 2021, Robati was fined $1000 and had his licence suspended for six months after pleading guilty to dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Robati was stood down from NRL duties just before Christmas following an unrelated incident and has not been training with his Broncos teammates.

And he may have played his last game for the club as the Broncos weigh up sacking the wayward rising star following numerous alleged off-field incidents.

The Broncos have earned a reputation for being one of the NRL’S worst behaved clubs in recent years, with a host of players embroiled in off-field controversies.

Last month, on the back of Robati’s serious charge, CEO Dave Donaghy said the club had drawn a line in the sand when it came to player behaviour.

“We’ve got a really strong culture, a culture that cares … it’s a great privilege to play for the Broncos and it comes with great responsibilities too,” he said. “We’ve done a lot of work in terms of our values and standards. To me, that underpins the culture.

“We’ve got some really strong and capable leaders. They’re leading the charge with this group.

“It was important to get the playing group back after a break. They’ve trained really hard and had a well-deserved break.

“They’re coming back in, there’s a line in the sand and opportunity to build over the next four weeks until the first trial. I don’t have any concerns over the next seven weeks. Kev (coach Kevin Walters) has been really clear from the outset of pre-season what’s required of these guys. We’ve got lofty goals and want to see continued progress.

“The guys are clear. Kev’s addressed it and Adam (Reynolds, captain) will address it. They’ve got my full support around that. I addressed it early in the pre-season and don’t believe I need to again.”
