Holiday treat at musuem
Kids get to don Army kit
Eager young recruits where lining up outside the door yesterday for part of the Museum of Tropical Queensland’s Camo Kids holiday program.
Once inside they joined hundreds of others trying on helmets and wearing camouflage makeup for the Active Service Day as soldiers from Townsville’s 3 rd Brigade gave them the inside running on army life.
Museum programming and engagement manager Claire Speedie said the Active service Day was a special event for the museum’s holiday program.
“It is when the army has kindly volunteered a lot of their soldiers to come out here e and show visitors a little but t about army life,” Ms Speedie said.
She said apart from the camouflage and helmets children were also learning about other aspects of army life.
“They are learning all bout health in the military how to treat injuries and how to stay healthy out in the field
They are also learning about radios and how communication works and we have also got one of the explosive detection dogs called Lucy here.”
She said they were expecting up to 700 children through the door yesterday to experience a taste of army life at the museum.
“It is a testament to the locals’ support for the army.”
Ms Speedie said the Camo Kids theme takes centre stage at the museum for the rest of the school holidays.
“Boot Camp which is an activity you can book in for we also have a trail where kids learn how to use a compass and navigate their way through the museum and there is also Camo Craft and dress-ups as well.”
The program runs throughout the school holidays apart from Good Friday and for more information go to https:// www.museum.qld.gov.au/museum-of-tropical-queensland/ whats-on/camo-kids
