Resort site makeover

A backpackers resort in South Townsville is set for renewal as corporate suites under the plans of its new Sydney-based owners. A fine dining restaurant is also planned.

Globuild, a unit and residential land developer, has acquired Adventurers Backpackers Resort in Palmer St through Colliers.

It also has plans for further developments in Townsville.

Globuild managing director George Daoud said he could see a lot of potential in the city with growth in the tourism and resources sectors and demand for new housing.

“The city has a thriving tourism industry which is only set to grow in the coming years,” Mr Daoud said.

“Furthermore, Townsville has a strong economy with a booming mining industry and a growing healthcare sector. This means there is a steady influx of business travellers, as well as tourists, ensuring a constant stream of potential guests for my resort,” Mr Daoud said.

He said they would completely refurbish the resort changing its dynamics into corporate suites with every room having its own ensuite and kitchenette.

They would provide 75 rooms by amalgamating space from the existing 100-room resort.

“With that, there will be state of the art appliances and lush furnishings. Everything in the resort will be updated from the driveway, windows,

doors, kitchens, bathrooms, exterior and interior,” Mr Daoud said.

An eastern Mediterraneanthemed restaurant called Levanti would provide fine dining in the restaurant space and a rooftop bar was planned to support the restaurant.

Colliers associate director Angelo Castorina said developers from outside Townsville were seeing the region in a different light to those who were in the city.

While other buyers looked at continuing the resort as a going concern, Mr Castorina said the buyer had a vision for its redevelopment “Southern developers are coming up and viewing properties in the Townsville market and seeing it as very good investment buying,” Mr Castorina said.

Adventurers Backpackers Resort was developed in the 1980s.

It includes single rooms and dormitories catering for up to 300 guests, a ground floor reception, communal kitchen, dining and lounge areas, a restaurant space, laundries and plenty of on-site carparking.

The building has about 4800sq m of floorspace across four levels.

It sits on 2833sq m of land with frontage to Mcilwraith and Palmer St.

A sale price was not disclosed.
