Recycling message for the region

-

Burdekin Shire Council is reminding residents to recycle correctly to help build a greener and more sustainable community.

The council is encouraging residents to follow simple guidelines when recycling: know what can and cannot be recycled; rinse all recyclable containers before placing them in the recycling bin to prevent contamination; and flatten c a r d b o a r d boxes to save space.

P l a s t i c bags, soft plastics and other nonr e c y c l a b l e m a t e r i a l should not be put in the recycling bin.

M a y o r Lyn Mclaughlin said everyone had a responsibility to take care of the environment.

“It’s important to remember that putting non-recyclable items in the recycling bin can cause contamination, which can result in perfectly good recyclables going to waste,” said Cr Mclaughlin.

“By taking the time to learn what can and cannot be recycled and following simple guidelines, we can all do our part to protect the environment,” she said.

“We need to work together to prevent contamination and ensure that our recycling efforts are effective to reduce waste, conserve resources, and create a cleaner and more sustainable community.

“I encourage all Burdekin residents to do their part and join us in this important effort.”

Councils in Queensland have to pay a levy on all waste taken to the tip.

This means the more that is recycled, the less that ratepayers have to pay.
