CAR WITH BABY RAMMED BY 4WD
Burdell mum feared for her life
A Townsville mum has opened up about the terrifying moment a suspected stolen four-wheel-drive rammed her car while her 14-monthold daughter cried in the back seat.
Candice Weston was left shaking after a light-coloured Mitsubishi four-wheel-drive rammed her car along Bainbridge St, Heatley about 5.15am on Friday.
The Burdell mum said the vehicle – which she suspects was stolen – collided with the rear side of her car, where her 14-month-old daughter had been sitting in her car seat at the time.
“I heard the metal crunch as they made impact,” Ms Weston said.
“If they had hit us at speed, I could have been burying my daughter.
“My mind was racing. I was afraid they might get out and try to steal my car, so I was desperately trying to think about how I would get my daughter out of there.
“I would have fought for her, but they ended up speeding off in the end.
“I was really shaking when I got out of the car. We’re lucky nothing worse happened.”
She said the four-wheeldrive was one of three suspected stolen cars she’d seen “speeding around” and “driving erratically” in Heatley that morning.
Police said investigations into the reported hit-and-run traffic crash were still ongoing.
Ms Weston said she worked at a fuel station in town where they encounter stolen vehicles attempting to fuel up all the time.
“We get a list of all the stolen cars to look out for, and there are more than 15 cars on it every day,” she said.
“You don’t let them fuel up and then get abused. Some of them are so young it’s scary.
“We seriously need some help to get these kids to stop all this because someone’s going to get hurt or die again.
“The people in power need to do more.
“I think something like what I went through would have to happen to them to finally open their eyes to what’s happening.”
