Show must go on for Burdekin after losing skipper
The Burdekin can launch itself into first place in Rugby League Townsville with a win over Centrals on Saturday afternoon, but they’ll have to do it without inspirational captain Ryan Davenport.
Davenport will be tied up with family commitments at the famous Burdekin Growers Race Day, where his wife’s family basically run the show.
Davenport’s mother-in-law Leanne Gudge is secretary, treasurer and organiser of the Burdekin Race Club and her partner Ricky Gudge is club president.
Roosters coach Kieren Dawes had to convince the rest of his squad to miss the popular race day on this one occasion.
“We almost didn’t have a team but the boys have thankfully really bought into it and changed their mind that they’re all going to play week,” Dawes said.
“(Davenport) has been setting it all up, it’s a family thing and family always comes first.
“He needs to be there for them and to help them as much as he can but at the same time the boys will need to do it without Ryan.
“It’s a big loss for us but I’m sure the boys will step up. They have sacrificed a lot just to be here for this game so hopefully this they’ll make it all worthwhile.” In Davenport’s absence, Mitch Guy has been named Roosters captain and Dan Rigano vicecaptain.
Burdekin are typically granted a bye to attend the race day but Dawes said they would need to be focused against a dangerous Tigers team.
“We’re not taking them lightly, they’ve been very competitive throughout the season, especially with Rob Lui there leading the pack,” Dawes said. “We’re focusing on our defence and trying to be disciplined and control the ball, and minimise their opportunities as much as we can.”
Still buzzing from their first win in two seasons, Norths host Brothers on Saturday evening while Charters Towers play Herbert River as each search for their second win.
Souths Bulls played Western Lions overnight on Friday.
