Roaring good time to be had

- Evan Morgan

The world of gangsters, Tommy guns, showgirls and the Roaring Twenties comes alive when Bugsy Malone hits the stage with a blast at the Townsville Civic Theatre this week.

The joint St Margaret Mary’s College and Ignatius Park Collge production brings the back alleys and speak-easies of New York to life in the much-loved musical.

Co-director Kylie Tillack said the cast had been rehearsing since the start of the school year and the musical was perfect to nurture the talents of budding performers.

“The beauty about Bugsy Malone is it’s actually really good … to develop the strengths of our younger cast,” Mrs Tillack said.

“There’s a lot of great musicals out there, but they rely heavily on maybe some slightly older people.

“When you’re trying to nurture and develop those young people and their love of musical theatre, Bugsy Malone captures that essence in terms of being gangsters and showgirls, but … it’s aimed at their level.

“It’s got to be fun and it’s a good time.

“I love working with young people to develop their performance skills, but at the same time it’s also them appreciating the behind-thescenes as well.

“Because we’ve also got some students who are working on crew and they are learning sort of jobs in terms of set lighting so it’s that really good learning experience for everybody.

“It’s going really well I’m looking forward to sharing it with general audiences.”

Bugsy Malone is a really fun toe-tapping show that showcases a wide range of roles.

“You’ve got leads, but there we’ve got over 30 mics in this show, because there are so many little characters that play a part in that journey on the game rivalry between fat Sam and Danny Dan,” Mrs Tillack said.

She said the audience could expect a fantastic show.

“It opens Thursday, seven o’clock -– they are the hottest tickets in town this week.

“If you like that Roaring Twentie glitz, glamour, bit of gangster fun, come along and you will enjoy it.”

Bugsy Malone runs from Thursday to Saturday and for book go to the Ticketshop.
