Band to seas the day on floating stage

- Jeremy Pierce

Brisbane band Sheppard is ready to make a splash at a spectacular concert on the Great Barrier Reef this weekend.

Alongside country music royalty Lee Kernaghan and a host of other emerging acts, Sheppard will take to the stage on a pontoon floating above the reef on Saturday for the once-in-a-lifetime concert.

Supported by the Australian and Queensland governments as part of post-cyclone Jasper recovery efforts, Savannah Sounds On The Reef will see performances in front of 100 “community heroes” from around the country, with the intimate gig to take place on Reef Magic’s floating pontoon off the coast of Cairns.

As well as serving as a thank you to worthy community volunteers, the concert will also help to promote October’s Savannah in the Round country music festival at Mareeba.

Now based in Nashville, Amy Sheppard has flown back to

Australia to join her siblings George and Emma for the show and said she didn’t need to be asked twice.

“It’s not every day you get to perform on a stage on the Great Barrier Reef, so it’s not something we were going to say ‘no’ to,” she said.

“Visiting the reef as a tourist is one of my favourite things to do so to perform here is incredible.

“And to play alongside a legend like Lee Kernaghan, who we worked with on Spirit Of The Anzacs, is a great opportunity.”
